THE DAWN FAMILY AT POTTERSWALLS

The Dawn family originated from the purchase of one cow, Coleraine Royal Verity from the late James King of Camus Coleraine at his herd dispersal in 1970.

My father bought Verity mid way through lactation for 76 gns, little did we know she was from one of the best show family lines.

In 1971 she dropped a bull however on 24th March 1972 Potterswalls Tricia was born. As a child a bond was formed with Tricia, which began my life long passion for the Jersey cow. In July 1972 Tricia and I attended Antrim Show's Childrens pet class. The Chief steward, Mr Tommy Lindsay told us we had a good calf. He got us entered for the Yearling heifer class at the show the following year. In a class of seventeen Tricia came out on top. This was the start of what was to become a long and interesting road.

The family is still going today through the Winsome and Dawn names. It is a family which has evolved to keep pace with the most modern of genetics. It really came to the fore with the arrival of Potterswalls Dawn. She won the Royal Dublin and the Royal Ulster in 1985, 1986 and 1987, culminating in the Interbreed title at the Royal Ulster in 1987 (she was the first Jersey cow to win the Interbreed at the RUWF).
